As part of its January State of Play, PlayStation both announced and shadow-dropped a new Silent Hill game. Silent Hill: The Short Message represents a change in perspective, taking place in first-person with a new female protagonist. It’s out now for free on the PlayStation Store.

The creepy trailer showed you, as the protagonist, wandering through dark locales, following clues left by a mysterious entity called Maya. The being seems to have some connection with your cell phone since the hero was seen using it to communicate and referencing it throughout the trailer.

According to the announcement, the game began as an experimental project, and included lots of new team members who were fans of the Silent Hill series. It also partnered with Hexadrive, and the plan was always to release it for free as a showcase of what the future could hold for Silent Hill.

The trailer ended with the surprise that it’s out today. The PlayStation presentation also gave a new look at Silent Hill 2.
